Preliminary information

Somerville Hockey Club will be running a truncated school summer hockey programme in 2017.  In previous years, the programme has run for 8 weeks prior to, and 4 weeks after, Christmas.  AGS is currently planning to replace the hockey turf in early 2018, so this year's programme will only run for 8 weeks prior to Christmas.

The programme will start at the beginning of Term 4, week commencing 16 October.  Please also note that, whilst the length of term 4 varies between schools, AGS' term 4 is only 7 weeks long this year, finishing on Friday 1 December 2017.  In order to have an 8-week programme, the final week will be after the end of term 4 and the last game will be on Thursday 7 December 2017.

Key dates

  • Registration opens - weekend 9/10 Sept
  • Registration closes - 29 Sept
  • Draw out - weekend 7/8 Oct
  • Programme starts - Tuesday 17 October

Grades, nights and times

  • Tuesday         Intermediate (Yrs 7 & 8)
  • Wednesday    Primary (ONLY Yrs 4 to 6, as the physical size difference means that younger players will not enjoy the experience)
  • Thursday        Secondary (Yrs 9 to 13)

There are three slots: 4.10pm, 4.45pm and 5.20pm.  All games are over by 5.55.

Players at Intermediate or Secondary school are NOT allowed to play down into a younger age group grade.

Team entries are on a first come first served basis.  Entries will not be accepted unless accompanied by payment.

Whilst summer hockey is designed to be fun and played with your mates, when that team of mates is too strong for the competition in that grade, you would be better advised to have two teams with more of a mixed ability range.

We may review the teams’ results after the first 4 weeks and consider grading the teams to make the competition more even.

We accept single players and, dependant on the numbers for each grade, will place you in a team.  However, as in prior years, the organisers prefer parents / boys / girls to organise their own teams, particularly where boys / girls already play hockey.  Once there are enough players for a team, normally a squad of 8, someone must volunteer to register, pay the entry fee and manage the team.  Each single player must complete a registration so SSSH has your details.  There is no fee to pay until you have been allocated to a team, so please ignore the request for payment once you have completed your registration.

If there are insufficient numbers to make up a team, we will circulate a list of all singles players to the managers of the teams for that grade, so that if teams are short managers can call you.

Any questions, by email only to, but please do not expect a response until late August when the organisers start to focus in detail on the 2017 programme.
