If you played for Somerville in 2023 and will not be returning, please advise us by emailing somervillejuniorhockey@gmail.com as this helps manage registrations.

Trial Dates

Skills Trials will be held the first 2 weekends. As team selection is primarily based on the skills results, we ask that you plan to attend one of the skills sessions shown below.

For players new to hockey in any grade, there will be a muster at each timeslot where a coach will run your child through basic foundation hockey skills. And will only move to the skills stations if confident.

Sunday 24 March, the third weekend, will only be used where necessary to carry out final skills testing or by invite only for games, as requested by our grade selectors to finalise teams.

2024 Trial Process

Trials will be held at Diocesan School turf, Clyde Street, Epsom this year. Underground parking entrance is on Clyde Street.

  • To support a good hockey experience, team selections are primarily based on players’ performance in the Hockey drill skills held at trials. Trial games may be used to finalise team placements (with the exception of Fun Sticks school Year 0-2, which has a Muster)

  • For most Junior team selections, we take into consideration, friends, siblings, transportation issues and parental involvement. Please note any key comments in the registration form.

  • Teams will be named before the end of Term 1 and be displayed on the Club website.

Kwik Sticks Year 7-8

  • There will be a minimum of 2 Skills trials. A third trial will be used with 6-aside games to help determine team selections.

  • The total number of players selected to each team will be predetermined by the coaching and selection staff.

  • The Club offer mixed gender teams in this age group, based on ability.

  • At the completion of the trial process, team announcements will be displayed on the Club website.

  • Although the Club views Y7/8 as a development phase the selection process will reflect a number of players placed into teams with players of similar ability (scaling teams 1 and 2)

  • Consideration is given to siblings and transportation outside of these teams.

  • AHA grading rounds can be used to ensure selections are as accurate as possible.

  • Due to the fluid nature of Junior trials the Club reserves the right to interchange players between teams within 21 days after the final announcement. The Club does this in response to player departure after trials and in an effort to balance the needs of social interaction (age/stage) and competitiveness.

Kiwi Sticks Year 5-6

  • There will be a minimum of 2 skills trials. A third trial will be used with 6-aside games to help determine team selections for teams 1-4.

  • Players/parents can support their registration application by means of Club assistance (umpire, coach, manage, administration, skills to support the running of the Club e.g. website, fundraising etc). This information should be recorded on the player registration form and will be factored into “Club placement” but not “team placement”..

  • Although the Club views Y5/6 as a development phase the selection process may reflect a number of players placed into teams with players of similar ability (scaling teams 1, 2 and 3). Consideration will be given to siblings/transportation/parental involvement outside of these teams.

  • AHA grading rounds may be used to ensure selections are as accurate as possible.

  • At the completion of the trial process team announcements will be displayed on the Club website.
