Trial & selection protocol

Trials are the primary method of team selection.

Trial notification is announced via the Club website, social media and displayed on the Club website.

Players should also review the “Player Pathway” sections within the appropriate to their level/age. Our over-arching goal is to select “like-ability” players operating in “like-ability” grades, and these protocols are designed to achieve this whilst promoting transparency of the selection process.

Players unable to attend all trials will be assessed from historic data and the available time they have made to present themselves to selectors. Players will not necessarily be afforded special attention or extra turf time through planned absence.

Selectors

  • All trials will have a minimum of 3 selectors present including an independent selector and should be in attendance at all scheduled trials.

  • The Club Development Officer assists the respective Junior or Youth Club Captain with selector appointment and sign off of teams at the completion of the trial process.

  • The Club avoids using parents as selectors unless they are a proven sport professional. Parents may still be appointed as a team coach. Where it can be avoided, selectors will not be related to trial participants.

  • Will have a hockey knowledge commensurate with the ability level of the trial.

  • Should view trials from a position separate from the trial participants and onlookers.

The Club

Our commitment to you

  • The Club will undertake best endeavours to place everyone in a team, however due to the fluid nature of the trial process, pragmatic/workable sizes for each team and restrictions the Club is operating under, no guarantee can be given for team/club placement.

  • Returning players unable to attend some or all trials, or physical/skill assessments, will be assessed on previous season feedback from their coach.

  • All players unavailable for trials through illness and/or injury will be considered.

  • At the completion of a trial process, squad/team lists will be communicated.

All Players

Your commitment to us

  • All new and returning players must register online before the close of registration

  • Absences from any trial must be communicated in advance directly to respective Club Captains

  • Players/parents are encouraged at registration to indicate any Club assistance they can provide ie umpire, coach, manager, administration or fundraising. This information should be recorded on the player registration form and will be factored into “club placement” but not “team placement”.

  • Players must attend trials and undertake required physical/skill assessments to be considered for Club “Priority teams” as defined in the Player Pathways sections on Club website.

  • When required, all players (regardless of team) must complete the Club physical and/or skill tests during the trial process (or an alternate date arranged by the club), unless injury or other matters outside the person’s control prevents this (discretion of selectors will be applied)
